TASIS The American School in England is an independent, co-educational school enrolling American and international day students in grades Nursery through 12, and boarding students in grades 9 through 12. The curriculum is American, and TASIS England seeks to carry on the tradition of excellence in American education in Europe established in 1955 by its parent school, The American School in Switzerland. Founded by Mrs. M. Crist Fleming, TASIS England opened its campus in Thorpe in 1976 to boarding and day students in grades 7 through 12. It has added programs and facilities to accommodate the current school population of over 650 students and 100 faculty. The Upper School numbers approximately 320 students, half of whom board, and 50 full-time and part-time faculty.
TASIS England students represent over 35 nations and more than a dozen languages. Upper School students follow a college-preparatory curriculum and enter American colleges and universities in the U.S. and Europe. Students also gain entrance to universities in the UK, Spain, and Japan. Internationalism is encouraged in classes, clubs, and activities, as well as in travel and in the residential setting. Small classes, academic and personal guidance, close student-faculty relationships, and careful blending of structure with personal freedom are designed to encourage students to assume, as they grow older, increasing responsibility for their own growth and development.
The majority of teachers at TASIS England are American, although approximately one-quarter of the faculty are British. Of the 100 teachers, some 20 also serve as faculty residents in the dormitories. In addition to teaching, all faculty share in the responsibilities of advising, coaching, sponsoring activities, and chaperoning travel and weekend excursions, and also in the evening and weekend supervision of the campus. Their contacts with students are many and varied, creating a close-knit community and enriching the life of the school.
An American school in an international setting, TASIS England promotes cultural understanding and appreciation. By living, studying, and socializing with students from diverse backgrounds and cultures, and participating in field trips and excursions offered in the United Kingdom and throughout Europe, TASIS England students gain an international outlook and awareness. TASIS England endorses through all its programs an enthusiasm for life, for learning, and for personal growth within a purposeful community.
