Friday July 22nd
New Jazz Couriers featuring Mornington Lockett
I am delighted to announce that the final Jazz in the Green before our Summer break features Tenor Sax player Mornington Lockett and the ?New Jazz Couriers?.
The New Jazz Couriers is an evolution of the group ?Celebrating the Jazz Couriers? formed by Mornington and Oscar Peterson drummer Martin Drew in 2001 which recreated the Tubby Hayes and Ronnie Scott Group of the late 50?s.
Today the music of the New Jazz Couriers takes in the repertoire of the Tubby Hayes Quartet as well as the compositions of the great British pianist and Vibraphone player Victor Feldman.
Mornington was born in Stepney, London but grew upon the Isle of Wight. Initially he studied clarinet but changed to the saxophone under Bobby Wellins at Dartington College in Devon, where he became the first person in the UK to get a degree on the instrument.
There have been many influences on his musical style including Miles Davis, John Coltrane and Michael Brecker.
As well as Mornington Lockett the New Jazz Couriers includes an exciting line up of Jim Hart on Vibes, Steve Melling on Piano and Martin Drew on drums. An old Jazz in the Green favourite, Andy Cleyndert is on bass.
I am sure that this will be a great end to our Spring/Summer program and we look forward to seeing many of you there.
As usual the doors open at 7.30 pm and the music will start shortly after 8pm
Tickets (?8 if ordered before, ?9 on the night) are available either from ?Genevieve? in Victoria Street, Englefield Green or from Alan Crouse on 01784 432813.
We are really looking forward to seeing you all ? this should be a summer?s night to remember!!
